Do kids really need to floss?

As dentists, we are often asked….When should my child start flossing?  My answer is almost always – TODAY!!  Children should start flossing when their first two baby teeth touch, most commonly between the ages of 2 and 6 years old.  If you can’t see spaces between your child’s teeth, then it is time to pick up the floss.  As your child’s manual dexterity improves they will be able to floss on their own, usually around 10 years old.  In the meantime, floss your child’s teeth for them.  This will stress the importance of proper oral hygiene and reinforce a flossing routine at an early age.   The best way to encourage good flossing habits is to floss yourself as your child will want to mimic your healthy habits!
